Taylor Swift’s “Karma” was not at all a relaxing thought for Ice Spice—in the best possible way.
In fact, while she now considers Taylor her “closest celebrity friend,” the rapper (real name: Isis Gaston) detailed how emotional she got after learning the Eras Tour performer reached out to see if she would collaborate on the “Karma” remix.
“I remember my manager called me, and he usually texts, but he called, and he’s like, ‘You ready for this one?’ And I’m thinking it’s going to be some bad news or something,” Ice recalled to Rolling Stone in an interview published July 25. “He’s like, ‘Taylor Swift has a record for you to get on from her album.’ I’m playing it cool on the phone. I’m like, ‘Oh, that’s cool. Super cool.’ And then I hang up the phone and I’m hysterically crying.”
And Ice even noted that her longtime producer Riot (real name: Ephrem Louis Lopez, Jr.), captured the moment—which took place in her New Jersey apartment—on camera.
“I’m in my walk-in closet, and I’m like, ‘Bro, this is not real life,’” she added. “Riot definitely filmed it. That’ll probably be in a documentary one day.”
But not everyone was as thrilled by the duet. Back when Taylor announced Ice would be joining her on the track—calling her “THE” artist to watch in a social media post—the “Munch” rapper was entangled in online controversy surrounding Taylor’s then-boyfriend Matty Healy, prompting some online speculation about Taylor’s intention behind the collaboration.
Prior to Taylor and Matty’s brief 2023 relationship, Matty had appeared on a podcast hosted by comedian Adam Friedland, during which he laughed at jokes where the hosts referred to the rapper as “an Inuit Spice Girl” and other offensive terms.
Ice didn’t address the controversy until months later—after Matty and Taylor had cut romantic ties—but she emphasized that the 1975 frontman had apologized to her and has shared she is a “huge” fan of Matty’s band.
“I actually was late as f--k to that,” she told Rolling Stone of the controversy. “He apologized multiple times, but I didn’t realize how big of a deal it was to other people. I feel like people just wanted something to be mad about, I guess. I wasn’t angry or sad or anything. I was just kind of confused. I never really cared about that.”
One thing Ice did care about? The fact that the “rude” speculation about Taylor’s intention behind took away from her moment.
“Why would she not want to be my friend?” Ice inquired. “Taylor f--ks with me. She’s so funny. I think our personalities mesh really well.”
Indeed, Ice and Taylor vibe so well that she was one of the many celebrity friends who joined Taylor to cheer on her boyfriend Travis Kelce during the NFL season, plus the “Fortnight” singer invited the rapper to perform “Karma” with her at the Eras Tour last year.
